Even if you’ve never watched A Christmas Story, you’re probably familiar with the classic warning, “You’ll shoot your eye out,” given to the movie’s main character when he receives an air rifle at Christmas. While the movie itself is a fun holiday classic, real-life shooting accidents are no laughing matter. Fortunately, most can be prevented with proper knowledge and training.
As in the movie, accidents involving a firearm often occur during the holiday season. This stems from several factors, including:
- Firearms given as gifts to inexperienced individuals who lack training
- Increased alcohol consumption over the holidays
- Out-of-school children having unsupervised access to unsecured firearms
- First-time or inexperienced hunters not having proper firearms training
If you have friends and family members, especially children, visiting for the holidays, keep these firearm safety tips in mind. Always make sure your firearms are properly secured with a firearm lock or locked inside a safe when not in use. Before hosting a holiday event in your home, always double-check to make sure your firearms are properly stored. If you have children, take the time to remind them about the basics of firearms safety. Also encourage your friends and family members to get proper firearms training before shooting that new handgun or rifle. At Triangle Shooting Academy, we offer a variety of firearms instruction classes.
We are also proud supporters of Project ChildSafe®, a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) that promotes firearms safety and education.
