For many of us living in the Triangle area, summertime is the season for cookouts, pool parties and weekend trips to the North Carolina coast. Summer is also when most children and teenagers are out of school and spend more time, often unsupervised, at home. Whether you plan to invite guests over for a backyard barbecue or you have kids at home this summer, it’s the perfect time to review your firearms safety and storage procedures.
Teaching Firearms Responsibility
We all have friends and family members who have never shot a firearm or lack basic shooting knowledge. It’s a good rule of thumb to keep this in mind before allowing your house guests to handle or shoot a firearm. Always ask your guests about their firearm experience before giving them one. And never allow anyone to handle firearms if they have been consuming alcohol. Instead, invite them to join you one day at the range or encourage them to take a basic firearms class.
When it comes to kids, it’s never too early to start teaching firearms safety. Make sure they understand these basic rules:
- Never play with firearms.
- Never handle firearms without permission from a supervising adult.
- Never go searching for firearms at home or at a friend’s house.
- If you find a firearm anywhere, leave it alone. Do not touch it.
- Always treat firearms as if they are loaded.
Triangle Shooting Academy offers an introductory class for youth shooters ages 12 to 16. It includes range time with professional instruction using .22 LR caliber handguns. Learn more.
Safely Storing Firearms
If you have firearms and ammunition in your home, it is your responsibility to make sure that they are stored securely in a safe built for firearms. The safe should be anchored to the floor or a wall and kept locked. Before hosting a cookout, youth sleepover or any summertime event, add a note to your prep list to double-check your firearms and make certain that they are properly stored.
If you do not have a firearm safe, Triangle Shooting Academy stocks a variety of approved models. Stop by today to check them out and get detailed advice from our team of firearms experts.
